WHY A PARTY?

There will be a welcome reception and a Bavarian evening. Isn’t that enough of social events? – Well, the good reasons for a additional and independent party are:

OPEN TO EVERYONE: Welcome reception and Bavarian evening are reserved for participants of ICFTD. Many local scientists unfortunately do not have the opportunity to attend the conference. The party will be a platform for international colleagues to meet with the local scientific community and vice versa.

KEEPING US TOGETHER: Younger participants tend to explore local nightlife. Doing that with accompanying colleagues from their sites results in many seperate and static groups roaming through the city. Scattered and predefined groups hamper exchange with colleagues from other sites.

GET YOU STARTED: As a tourist it is easy to miss the really exciting places. With local colleagues as a guide your visit will almost certainly be more authentic and interesting. That’s why the party is organized at the very first evening of the conference. We really hope you will find some time to explore the Bavarian capital. As “most northern city of Italy” and “world village” Munich propagates a “laptop and leather-trousers” lifestyle.

WHO WE ARE

We are three colleagues who got to know each other in 2013 during an FTD conference hosted by Bruce Miller and Adam Boxer in San Francisco: Chiadi Onyike from Baltimore, Mario Masellis from Toronto and Felix Mueller-Sarnowski from Munich. We share not only the passion for FTD research but also the enthusiasm for good music, nightlife, and international exchange.

Fortunately we are not alone: our idea to organize a party for the FTD-community is supported by the majority of the Munich ICFTD organizing committee: Janine Diehl-Schmid, Manuela Neumann, Günter Höglinger, Dieter Edbauer and Markus Otto.

Even colleagues from international centers did not hasitate to support our ambitious, spontaneously heated up plan, to set up a party just 3 weeks before the conference: Emily Rogalski, Martin Rossor and John van Swieten believed in our vision and willingly helped.

Last but not least the event could not have been realized without the obliging team of Muffatwerk: special thanks to Christian Waggershauser and Flo Haderer.

THE STORY

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner and magic show in San Francisco. At ICFTD 2016 in Vancouver we were fascinated by a nightly tour and buffet at the aquarium. Great social events, but those of us feeling still young at heart missed a little bit of music, dancing and contact to the local peers outside the confernce setting.

We chose a pub as starting point for a tour through Vancouvers nightlife. Unfortunately it turned out that good advice regarding the local club scene was sparse. While trying to achive consense what to do and where to go, we got more and more stuck among some beers in the pub. Finally the clubbing remained pure fiction and we had to withdraw ourselfs back into the conference hotel.

This is when imagination seized our minds: what if there would have been a conference-party in a cool tiny Club? Wouldn’t it have been great to dance and chat with the local scientific community? Wouldn’t that have been a perfect starter for further expeditions?

While Felix and Mario had almost forgotten about those Vancouver dreams, Chiadi  warmed them up during AAIC 2016 in Torronto. It did not take us too long to join efforts for letting our idea become true.

August 31st, 2016 – the ftd.party

Muffatwerk is a former waterworks and power plant in the heart of Munich right next to Isar river. Built in 1837 by the councilors Franz Karl Muffat and his brother Karl August Muffat for the neighbouring district of “Haidhausen” it closed down in 1973. Since 1993 Muffatwerk is a venue for international art and culture. The site central site of Muffatwerk is Muffathall, the former machine floor, which is mostly used for concerts. A beergarden was added in 2002. In 2005 the Ampere Club opened its doors. Muffatcafe is located at the entrance of Muffathall and is well known for it’s relaxed lounging athmosphere.

frequently asked questions

inline-title

Is there ample parking at the venue?

No, there is no realistic chance to park a car near Muffatcafe. But going by car in Munich is really not neccessary anyway. Public transport is quick and efficient. Take the “S-Bahn” to Rosenheimer Platz, or Tram to “Deutsches Museum”. From there or ICFTD conference it is only about 300 meters!

What about smoking?

Smoking in the venue is prohibited by German law. But you are free to smoke at the terrace directly in front of Muffatcafe.

Is there an official end of the ftd.party?

As there are no official closing hours at the venue, the party is theoretically open end! Practically – with respect to the following conference day – we plan to party at least till 2 am.

How do I learn whether the Isar Picknick takes place?
